Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Beef Patty

In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix gently until just combined; avoid overworking the meat to keep the patty tender.

  2. 2

    Form the Patty

Divide the mixture into two equal portions and form each portion into a round patty about ¾ inch thick. Make a slight indentation in the center of each patty to prevent it from puffing up while cooking.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Cook the Patty

Heat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Place the patties on the grill or skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes on one side. Flip the patties and place a slice of cheddar cheese on top. Cook for another 3-4 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the burger is cooked to your desired doneness.

  2. 4

    Toast the Buns

While the patties are cooking, slice the burger buns in half. If desired, toast the buns on the grill or in a toaster until golden brown.

Assembly

  1. 5

    Assemble the Cheeseburger

Place a cooked beef patty on the bottom half of each toasted bun. Top with lettuce leaves and a slice of tomato (sliced from the medium tomato). Add ketchup and mustard to taste, then place the top half of the bun on the burger.
