Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Peel the Potatoes

Start by peeling the potatoes using a vegetable peeler. Remove any blemishes or spots. Rinse the potatoes under cold running water to clean them.

  2. 2

    Cut the Potatoes

Cut the peeled potatoes into evenly sized chunks, about 1-2 inches each. This will help them cook evenly.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Boil the Potatoes

Place the cut potatoes into a large pot and cover with cold water by at least an inch. Add 1 teaspoon of salt to the water. Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat to medium and let the potatoes cook for about 15-20 minutes or until they are fork-tender.

  2. 4

    Drain the Potatoes

Once the potatoes are tender, carefully drain them in a colander and let them sit for a minute to allow excess steam to escape.

Mashing

  1. 5

    Mash the Potatoes

Return the drained potatoes to the pot or place them in a large mixing bowl. Use a potato masher or a ricer to mash the potatoes until smooth and creamy.

  2. 6

    Add Butter and Milk

While mashing, add the butter and milk gradually. Continue mashing until the butter is melted and fully incorporated into the potatoes.

  3. 7

    Season the Mashed Potatoes

Add salt and black pepper to taste. Mix well to ensure the seasoning is evenly distributed.

Serving

  1. 8

    Serve Hot

Spoon the mashed potatoes into a serving dish. Optionally, top with a pat of butter or chopped herbs for garnish. Serve immediately.
