Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare Bread

If the bread is not day-old, cut it into cubes and let it sit out for a few hours or bake in a low oven to dry out slightly.

  2. 2

    Chop Vegetables

Chop the onion, celery, and garlic. Set aside.

  3. 3

    Chop Herbs

Chop the fresh parsley, sage, and thyme. Set aside.

Cooking

  1. 4

    Sauté Vegetables

In a large skillet, heat a tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and celery, and sauté until softened, about 5-7 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.

  2. 5

    Combine Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the bread cubes, sautéed vegetables, chopped herbs, salt, black pepper, and optional cranberries and nuts if using.

  3. 6

    Add Broth and Eggs

Pour the chicken or vegetable broth over the bread mixture. Add the beaten eggs and mix until everything is well combined and the bread is moistened.

Baking

  1. 7

    Prepare Baking Dish

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.

  2. 8

    Transfer to Dish

Transfer the stuffing mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it out evenly.

  3. 9

    Bake

Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until golden brown on top.
