1

Measure and chill glass

If you prefer a slightly colder drink, place an old-fashioned glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes. Otherwise proceed with a regular chilled glass.

2

Add ingredients to mixing glass

Place a mixing glass or cocktail shaker on your work surface. Add 2 oz bourbon or rye whiskey, 1 oz amaretto, and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters into the mixing glass.

3

Add ice and stir

Fill the mixing glass with large ice cubes (enough to come near the top, about 3 large pieces). Using a bar spoon, stir the mixture gently but thoroughly for 20–30 seconds until the liquid is well chilled (about 15–25% dilution). Stirring rather than shaking maintains a silky texture and clarity.

4

Strain over fresh ice

Remove the chilled old-fashioned glass from the freezer (if used). Place 1–2 large fresh ice cubes or a single large ice sphere in the glass. Strain the stirred cocktail from the mixing glass into the prepared glass over the fresh ice.

5

Garnish and finish

Express an orange peel over the drink by holding it with the outer zest facing down and giving it a firm twist to release oils over the surface. Run the peel around the glass rim and drop it into the drink as a garnish.

6

Serve

Serve immediately. Sip slowly to enjoy the nutty sweetness of the amaretto balanced with the whiskey and bitters.
