Cocktail Base

If using a sugar cube

Method

Prepare Glass & Sweetener

1

Dissolve sugar and bitters

If using a sugar cube: place the sugar cube in a rocks glass, add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters and about 1/4 tsp water. Muddle until the sugar mostly dissolves and forms a paste. If using simple syrup: add 1/2 tsp simple syrup and 2 dashes bitters directly to the glass and stir to combine.

Build Cocktail

2

Add whiskey and ice

Add the large ice cube (or several ice cubes) to the glass, then pour 2 oz bourbon or rye whiskey over the ice.

3

Stir

Stir gently for about 20–30 seconds (10–15 full revolutions) until chilled and slightly diluted. This chills the spirit and integrates the sweetener and bitters.

Garnish & Serve

4

Express orange oils

Hold an orange peel skin-side down over the glass and give it a firm twist to express the oils onto the surface of the cocktail. Optionally, rub the peel around the glass rim to add aroma.

5

Drop the twisted orange peel into the glass. Optionally add a Luxardo or maraschino cherry on a pick. Serve immediately.
