Method
Cocktail
- 1
Prepare glass
Chill a coupe or rocks glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes, or fill with ice and water while you prepare the cocktail.
- 2
Combine base ingredients
In a cocktail shaker, add 2 oz vodka, 1 oz Irish cream, 0.5 oz creme de cacao, 0.5 oz coffee liqueur (if using), 0.25 oz chilled espresso (if using) and 0.25 oz simple syrup. These amounts produce a balanced, slightly boozy cream cocktail. Add 1 oz half-and-half to give body and silkiness.
- 3
Add ice and shake
Fill the shaker about two-thirds full with ice (approximately 4–6 large cubes). Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the exterior of the shaker is very cold and you see some dilution on the metal.
- 4
Double strain
Discard ice from the chilled glass. Fine-strain the shaken cocktail into the glass using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer to catch any small ice chips and ensure a silky texture.
Garnish & Finish
- 5
Float heavy cream
Gently pour 0.5 oz heavy cream over the back of a bar spoon held just above the drink surface so the cream floats as a thin layer on top, creating a two-tone appearance and extra richness.
- 6
Finish and serve
Lightly grate 1 tsp dark chocolate or dust with cocoa powder over the cream layer. Place 2 coffee beans on the surface as a classic garnish. Serve immediately with a small spoon or stirrer so the guest can incorporate the cream if they wish.
