Ingredients

Pasta

Cheese Sauce

Toppings (optional)

Preparation

Pasta Cooking

1. Boil Water

In a large pot, bring water to a boil. Add a generous pinch of salt.

2. Cook Macaroni

Add elbow macaroni to the boiling water and cook according to package instructions until al dente, approximately 7-9 minutes. Drain and set aside.

Cheese Sauce Preparation

3. Make Roux

In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, whisk in the all-purpose flour, stirring constantly for about 2 minutes until the mixture is bubbly and slightly golden.

4. Add Milk

Slowly whisk in the milk, continuing to stir to avoid lumps. Cook for about 5-7 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly.

5. Add Cheeses and Seasoning

Reduce heat to low and add the shredded cheddar cheese and cream cheese. Stir until melted and smooth. Season with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika.

Combine and Serve

6. Mix Pasta and Sauce

Add the cooked elbow macaroni to the cheese sauce, stirring well to combine until all pasta is coated in the cheese sauce.

7. Optional Topping

If desired, mix the bread crumbs and grated Parmesan cheese together and sprinkle evenly over the macaroni and cheese.

8. Bake (Optional)

If using the topping, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for about 15-20 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the cheese is bubbling.

9. Serve

Remove from oven, let cool slightly, and serve hot. Enjoy your creamy, cheesy macaroni and cheese!
