Cooking the Rice
1. Rinse the Rice
Place the long grain wild rice in a fine mesh strainer and rinse it under cold running water for about 2-3 minutes. This helps to remove any excess starch and impurities.
2. Combine Ingredients
In a medium saucepan, combine the rinsed wild rice, water, and salt. Stir to combine.
3. Bring to a Boil
Turn the heat to high and bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan, and let it simmer.
4. Simmer the Rice
Allow the rice to simmer on low heat for about 45-60 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the water has been absorbed. Check occasionally, and if the water evaporates before the rice is done, add a little more water as needed.
Optional Add-ins
6. Sauté Vegetables
In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onions, sliced mushrooms, and diced celery. Sauté for about 5-7 minutes, or until the onions are translucent and the vegetables are tender.
7. Combine with Rice
Once the rice is cooked and fluffed, add the sautéed vegetables to the rice and gently mix until evenly combined. Adjust seasoning with more salt if desired.
