Method
Hush Puppies Preparation
- 1
Make the Batter
In a large mixing bowl, combine cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper. Whisk together until well mixed.
- 2
Add Wet Ingredients
In a separate bowl, whisk together buttermilk and egg. Pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture and stir until just combined.
- 3
Incorporate Ham and Onions
Gently fold in the diced ham and chopped green onions until evenly distributed.
- 4
Heat the Oil
In a heavy-bottomed pot, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- 5
Fry the Hush Puppies
Using a spoon or small ice cream scoop, drop batter into the hot oil. Fry in batches for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown, turning occasionally.
- 6
Drain and Serve
Remove hush puppies with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Serve warm with spicy remoulade.
