Method
Combine liquids
- 1
Measure and pour
In a large clean pitcher or container that holds at least 1 gallon, pour 3.8 cups filtered water and 2.2 cups whole milk. These amounts together equal roughly 1 gallon (128 fl oz) when combined with other small additions; using both water and milk produces a balanced, slightly creamy beverage base called 'Gallon'.
- 2
Stir the liquids gently to combine into a uniform base before adding sweeteners so that the sugar dissolves more evenly.
Sweeten and flavor
- 3
Add 4 tablespoons granulated sugar to the combined liquids. Stir thoroughly until the sugar is fully dissolved. Taste and adjust sweetness if desired (add up to 1–2 more tbs).
- 4
Add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and 1 teaspoon fine sea salt. Stir to incorporate. The salt helps round the flavor and the vanilla provides an aromatic note.
- 5
If using, grate 1 teaspoon lemon zest and stir it in for a bright, fresh accent. Leave zest whole (do not strain) for additional aroma, or remove after infusion if you prefer a clear beverage.
Chill and finish
- 6
Cover the pitcher tightly and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to let flavors meld and the beverage fully chill. For best flavor, refrigerate 3–4 hours or overnight.
- 7
- 8
Serve over ice in tall glasses. Garnish with a thin lemon wheel or a light sprinkle of lemon zest if used.
