Method
Sandwich
- 1
Prepare bread
Preheat a sandwich press or large skillet/griddle over medium heat. Slice the Cuban bread lengthwise, creating a top and bottom half. If the loaf is large, make two sandwiches by halving crosswise. Lightly brush the cut exterior (outside) of each half with olive oil (about 1 tsp total) and the interior (cut) sides with the softened butter (about 1 tbs per interior). This helps achieve a golden crust and a buttery interior.
- 2
Assemble condiments
On the bottom (buttered interior) half spread the Dijon mustard evenly (about 2 tbs total). On the top interior half spread the mayonnaise (about 1 tbs). Season the bottom interior lightly with 1/4 tsp salt and 1/8 tsp black pepper to taste.
- 3
Layer fillings
On the mustard-coated bottom half, layer the ingredients in this order for even distribution and proper melting: first place the sliced roast pork (8 oz) spread evenly across the bread, then layer the ham (6 oz) over the pork, next arrange the dill pickle slices (8 slices) across the meat, and finally place the Swiss cheese slices (6 slices) on top so they will be closest to the hot press for melting. Press the top half (mayonnaise side) over the stacked fillings.

Press and cook
If using a sandwich press: place the assembled sandwich in the press and close. Cook for 4 to 6 minutes until the cheese is melted and the bread is deeply golden and crisp. If using a skillet or griddle: place the sandwich on the hot skillet and set a heavy pan or foil-wrapped brick on top to press. Cook 3 to 4 minutes, then flip carefully, press again and cook another 3 to 4 minutes until bread is golden and cheese melted. Reduce heat slightly if bread is browning too quickly.
- 5
Rest and slice
Remove the sandwich from the press or skillet and let it rest 1 to 2 minutes—this prevents the hot fillings from spilling out. Using a sharp serrated knife, cut the sandwich into 2 or 4 portions (if you made two sandwiches, cut each in half).
- 6
Serve
Serve immediately while hot and melty. Optionally garnish with extra pickle slices or serve with plantain chips or a small side salad.
