Method

Preparing the Onions

  1. 1

    Slice the Onions

Peel the large onions and slice them into 1/4 inch thick rings. Separate the rings and set aside.

Making the Batter

  1. 2

    Combine Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, and paprika until well combined.

  2. 3

    Add Sparkling Water

Gradually add the cold sparkling water to the dry ingredients, whisking until the batter is smooth and free of lumps. The batter should be thick enough to coat the onion rings.

Frying the Onion Rings

  1. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a large deep skillet or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can check the temperature by dropping a small amount of batter into the oil; it should sizzle and rise to the surface.

  2. 5

    Coat the Onion Rings

Take a few onion rings at a time and dip them into the batter, ensuring they are thoroughly coated.

  3. 6

    Fry the Onion Rings

Carefully place the coated onion rings into the hot oil, frying in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry for about 2-3 minutes or until they are golden brown, turning occasionally.

  4. 7

    Drain and Cool

Once golden brown, use a slotted spoon to remove the onion rings from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.

Serving

  1. 8

    Serve with Dips

Serve the crispy onion rings hot with ketchup and ranch dressing on the side for dipping.
