Method
Preparation
Chill glass
Place a rocks glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice and water to chill while you prepare the cocktail.
Combine ingredients
In a mixing glass, add 1 oz gin, 1 oz Campari, 1 oz sweet vermouth, 2 dashes of orange bitters, and 0.25 oz luxardo cherry liqueur (if using).
Stir
Fill the mixing glass with plenty of ice and stir gently but thoroughly for 20–30 seconds (about 15–20 full strokes) until well chilled, slightly diluted, and silky in texture.
Assembly
Prepare glass
Empty the chilled rocks glass if you used ice water. Place a single large ice cube (or several large cubes) into the glass.
Strain
Strain the stirred cocktail into the prepared rocks glass over the large ice cube using a Hawthorne or julep strainer to catch any shards.
Express orange peel
Hold a wide strip of orange peel over the glass and give it a firm twist to spray the oils over the surface, then rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the drink.
Garnish
Optionally, add a maraschino cherry on a pick and rest it on the ice. Serve immediately.
Notes
This Overtime Negroni keeps the classic 1:1:1 ratio but adds a touch of maraschino liqueur and orange bitters for extra depth and a slightly sweeter, more rounded finish. Adjust the 0.25 oz luxardo up to 0.5 oz if you prefer a sweeter, richer profile, or omit for a cleaner, more classic Negroni.
