Sandwich
Garlic Butter (if making from scratch)
For cooking
Method
Garlic Butter (make first if using homemade)
- 1
Make garlic butter
In a small bowl, combine softened butter, minced garlic, chopped parsley, lemon juice (if using), and a pinch of salt. Stir until well blended. Set aside at room temperature so it spreads easily.
Hash Brown
- 2
Form and pan-fry hash brown patty
Place the thawed, patted-dry shredded hash browns in a bowl. Season with 1/8 tsp black pepper and 1/8 tsp salt. Heat 1 teaspoon neutral oil in a nonstick skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering. Press the hash browns into a compact 4–4.5 inch disk about 1/2 inch thick (use a spatula or small ring mold). Carefully set the patty into the hot skillet and cook undisturbed 4–5 minutes until the bottom is deep golden and crisp. Flip gently and cook another 3–4 minutes until cooked through and crisp on both sides. Transfer to a plate and lower heat to medium.
Egg
- 3
Fry the egg
Wipe the skillet if needed, or use a second skillet. Add 1/2 teaspoon oil or spray and heat over medium. Crack the egg into the pan and cook to desired doneness: for sunny-side up, cook 2–3 minutes until whites are set but yolk still runny; for over-medium, cook 2 minutes, flip gently, and cook 30–45 seconds. Season the egg with a pinch of salt and a light dusting of black pepper.
Meat
- 4
Prepare the meat
If using pre-cooked bacon, warm 2–3 strips in the skillet 30–60 seconds per side until hot and slightly crisp. If using a sausage patty, cook over medium heat 3–4 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. If using sliced ham, warm slices 30–60 seconds per side. Keep the meat warm on low heat or on a plate covered with foil.
Assemble & Melt Cheese
- 5
Toast and butter the bread
Toast the English muffin or bun until golden. Spread about 1/2 tablespoon garlic butter on the cut face of each half while still warm so it melts in.
