Oreo Crust

Brûléed Bananas

Method

Oreo Crust

  1. 1

    Prepare the Oreo Crust

In a food processor, crush the Oreo cookies into fine crumbs. Melt the unsalted butter and combine it with the cookie crumbs until well mixed.

  2. 2

    Form the Crust

Press the mixture into the bottom and up the sides of a 9-inch trifle dish or similar. Place in the refrigerator to set while preparing the pastry cream.

Pastry Cream

  1. 3

    Heat the Milk

In a medium saucepan over medium heat, heat the whole milk until it's steaming but not boiling.

  2. 4

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a separate bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar, cornstarch, and egg yolks until well blended.

  3. 5

    Combine the Mixtures

Slowly pour the hot milk into the egg mixture, whisking constantly to temper the eggs. Return the mixture to the saucepan.

  4. 6

    Thicken the Cream

Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens and comes to a gentle boil. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and unsalted butter.

  5. 7

    Cool the Cream

Transfer the pastry cream to a bowl, cover with plastic wrap directly on the surface to prevent a skin from forming, and let it cool completely.

Brûléed Bananas

  1. 8

    Slice the Bananas

Peel and slice the bananas into 1/2-inch thick rounds.

  2. 9

    Caramelize the Sugar

In a skillet, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat. Add the brown sugar and stir until dissolved.

  3. 10

    Brûléed the Bananas

Add the sliced bananas and cook for 2-3 minutes, gently turning, until they are caramelized and golden brown. Remove from heat and let cool.

Assembly

  1. 11

    Layer the Trifle

In the prepared Oreo crust, layer half of the cooled pastry cream, followed by half of the brûléed bananas. Repeat the layers with the remaining ingredients.

  2. 12

    Top with Whipped Cream

Spread the whipped cream on top and sprinkle with crushed Oreo cookies for garnish.

  3. 13

    Chill and Serve

Refrigerate the trifle for at least 2 hours before serving to allow the flavors to meld.
