Calamari

Marinara Sauce

Method

Calamari Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Calamari

Rinse the calamari rings under cold running water and pat them dry with paper towels.

  2. 2

    Make the Breading

In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix well.

  3. 3

    Prepare the Egg Wash

In another bowl, whisk the egg and milk together until well combined.

  4. 4

    Bread the Calamari

Dip each calamari ring first in the egg wash, then in the flour mixture, ensuring they are fully coated.

  5. 5

    Heat the Oil

In a large, deep skillet or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  6. 6

    Fry the Calamari

Fry the breaded calamari in batches for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

Marinara Sauce Preparation

  1. 7

    Sauté the Garlic

In a saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1 minute.

  2. 8

    Add the Tomatoes

Pour in the canned crushed tomatoes and stir to combine.

  3. 9

    Season the Sauce

Add the dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and black pepper. Simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  4. 10

    Serve

Remove the marinara sauce from heat and serve alongside the fried calamari.
