Beer Braised Bratwurst Recipe

Traditionally, bratwurst is made with pork and veal and includes ginger, nutmeg, allspice, caraway seed, celery seed and cardamon, salt and pepper. We braise our brats in Dunkel beer with sauerkraut and onions before browning them off on the grill.

    Prepare the Ingredients

    Slice the onion into thin rings and set aside.

    Braise the Bratwurst

    In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté until they become translucent.

    Add Sauerkraut and Beer

    Stir in the sauerkraut, caraway seeds, salt, and pepper. Pour the Dunkel beer over the mixture.

    Cook the Brats

    Add the bratwurst to the pot. Bring the mixture to a simmer, cover, and let it braise for about 30 minutes.

    Grill the Bratwurst

    Remove the bratwurst from the pot and preheat the grill. Grill the bratwurst for about 5-7 minutes on each side, until browned and cooked through.

    Serve

    Serve the grilled bratwurst with the sauerkraut and onion mixture on the side.
