Bagel Dough

Method

Making Bagels

  1. 1

    Prepare the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy. Add the bread flour and salt; mix until a dough forms.

  2. 2

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

  3. 3

    Shape the Bagels

Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball, then poke a hole in the center with your finger to form a bagel shape. Stretch the hole to about 2 inches in diameter.

  4. 4

    Boil the Bagels

Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Boil the bagels for 1-2 minutes on each side. Remove and let drain on a wire rack.

  5. 5

    Bake the Bagels

Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Place bagels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Optionally, sprinkle with toppings like sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or everything seasoning. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.

  6. 6

    Cool and Serve

Let the bagels cool on a wire rack before serving. Enjoy them plain or with your favorite spreads.
