Method
For the Calamari
- 1
Prepare the Calamari
Rinse the calamari rings under cold water and pat them dry with paper towels.
- 2
Make the Breading
In a large bowl, mix together the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper.
- 3
- 4
Coat the Calamari
Dip the calamari rings first into the egg mixture, then into the flour mixture, ensuring they are fully coated.
- 5
Heat the Oil
In a deep pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- 6
Fry the Calamari
Carefully add the coated calamari rings to the hot oil in batches, frying until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes. Remove and drain on a paper towel.
For the Spicy Tomato Sauce

Sauté Garlic
In a saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic cloves and sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
- 8
Add Tomatoes and Seasonings
Stir in the canned crushed tomatoes, red pepper flakes, salt, and sugar. Bring to a simmer.
- 9
Simmer the Sauce
Reduce heat and let the sauce simmer for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- 10
Finish with Basil
Stir in the basil leaves just before serving. Adjust seasoning to taste.
