Prep & Assembly
- 1
Preheat oven
Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). If using a broiler for finishing, position the rack about 6 inches from the broiler element and preheat broiler to high.
- 2
Slice the loaf in half lengthwise to create two even bread 'boats'. If you prefer smaller servings, slice the loaf into 1-inch thick diagonal pieces but keep them attached at the bottom so you can spread butter on each slice.
- 3
Drain the mozzarella and pat dry with paper towels. If using a whole mozzarella log, slice or tear into 1/4-inch strips so it melts evenly.
- 4
In a small bowl combine the softened butter, olive oil, minced garlic, chopped parsley, grated Parmesan, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes. Mix thoroughly until smooth and uniform.

Baking & Finishing
- 7
Place the assembled bread on a baking sheet lined with parchment or foil (for easier cleanup). Bake in the preheated 400°F oven for 10–12 minutes, until the butter is melted and the cheese is fully melted and beginning to bubble.
- 8
For a golden-brown, slightly charred top, switch the oven to broil and broil for 1–2 minutes, watching very closely to prevent burning. Remove when the cheese is bubbly and has light golden spots.
- 9
Remove the garlic bread from the oven and let rest for 1–2 minutes. If you baked a whole loaf, use a serrated knife to cut into 1- to 1.5-inch slices now. If you prepared individual slices earlier, separate them carefully.
- 10
Sprinkle the chopped fresh basil (if using) over the hot cheese and serve immediately while piping hot.
