- 2
Add Milk
Gradually add the milk while continuing to whisk. Keep whisking until the mixture thickens and starts to bubble, about 5-7 minutes.
- 3
Incorporate Cheese and Seasoning
Remove the saucepan from heat. Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese until melted, then add salt, black pepper, and nutmeg. Mix well and set aside.
Assembling the Hot Brown
- 4
Prepare Texas Toast
Toast the Texas toast slices in a toaster or on a griddle until golden brown on both sides.
- 5
Layer Ingredients
On each slice of toasted Texas toast, layer sliced roasted turkey evenly. Top with sliced tomatoes and chopped bacon.
- 6
Add Mornay Sauce
Generously pour the prepared Mornay sauce over the layered turkey, tomatoes, and bacon on each toast slice.
- 7
Top with Cheese
Sprinkle an additional cup of shredded cheddar cheese on top of the Mornay sauce for extra flavor.
- 8
Bake
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the assembled hot browns on a baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
- 9
Serve
Remove from the oven and let cool for a minute. Serve immediately, garnished with additional sliced tomatoes if desired.
