Method
Preparation
- 1
Slice the Onions
Peel the onions and slice them into 1/4 inch thick rings. Separate the rings and set them aside.
Batter Mixing
- 2
Prepare the Batter
In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Whisk until well combined. In another bowl, beat the egg and add the milk. Mix well and then pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir until just combined; do not overmix.
Frying
- 3
Heat the Oil
In a deep frying pan or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping a small amount of batter in; it should sizzle and rise to the surface.
- 4
Coat the Onions
Dunk each onion ring into the batter, making sure it is completely coated. Allow any excess batter to drip off.
- 5
Fry the Onion Rings
Carefully place the coated onion rings into the hot oil. Fry them in batches to avoid overcrowding. Cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown and crispy. Remove them with a slotted spoon and place on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil.
