For Serving
Method
Prepare the Black Bean Patty
- 1
Mash the Black Beans
In a large bowl, mash the canned black beans with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth, leaving some chunks for texture.
- 2
Add Ingredients
Stir in the bread crumbs, finely chopped bell pepper, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, cumin, cayenne pepper, salt, black pepper, and the egg. Mix well until all ingredients are combined.
- 3
Form Patties
Divide the mixture into two equal portions and shape each into a patty. Set aside.
Cook the Patties
- 4
Heat the Pan
Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Optionally, add a small amount of oil to prevent sticking.
- 5
Cook Patties
Place the black bean patties in the skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side until they are browned and heated through.
- 6
Add Cheese
In the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Pepper Jack cheese on each patty and cover the skillet to allow the cheese to melt.
Prepare the Buns and Serve
- 7
Toast the Buns
While the patties are cooking, toast the brioche buns in a toaster or on another skillet until golden brown.
- 8
Assemble the Burger
On the bottom half of each toasted brioche bun, place a lettuce leaf, followed by the cooked black bean patty with melted cheese, slices of tomato, onion, and sweet pickles. Top with the other half of the bun.
- 9
Serve
Serve the burgers immediately with a side of potato chips.
