Method

Preparing the Filo Pastry

  1. 1

    Thaw Filo Pastry

If using frozen filo pastry, remove it from the freezer and allow it to thaw in the refrigerator overnight or at room temperature for about 2 hours.

  2. 2

    Prepare Baking Dish

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with some melted butter.

  3. 3

    Layer Filo Sheets

Unroll the filo pastry and keep it covered with a damp cloth to prevent it from drying. Brush one sheet with melted butter, then layer another sheet on top and brush it again. Repeat this process for about 8-10 layers.

Preparing Nut Filling

  1. 4

    Mix Nuts and Spices

In a bowl, combine the chopped walnuts, chopped almonds, and ground cinnamon. Mix well to ensure the spices are evenly distributed.

Assembling Baklava

  1. 5

    Add Nut Filling

Spread a layer of the nut mixture evenly over the layered filo in the baking dish. Add 4-5 more layers of filo, brushing melted butter between each layer. Repeat the layering of nuts and filo until all filling and pastry are used, finishing with a top layer of filo.

  2. 6

    Cut Baklava

Using a sharp knife, cut the assembled baklava into diamond or square shapes before baking. This will help with even cooking and easier serving.

Baking Baklava

  1. 7

    Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the baklava is golden brown and crisp.

Preparing Sweet Syrup

  1. 8

    Make Syrup

In a saucepan, combine the sugar, water, honey, and vanilla extract. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.

Final Assembly

  1. 9

    Pour Syrup

Once the baklava is done baking, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the warm syrup over it, ensuring that it seeps into the cuts and layers.

  2. 10

    Cool and Serve

Allow the baklava to cool completely before serving. This will help the syrup soak in and enhance the flavors.
