Fried Green Tomatoes
Method
Cooking Instructions
- 1
Prepare the Tomatoes
Slice the green tomatoes into 1/4 inch thick slices and sprinkle both sides with salt. Let them sit for about 10 minutes to draw out excess moisture.
- 2
Set Up Breading Stations
In one bowl, place the all-purpose flour mixed with black pepper and cayenne pepper. In a second bowl, pour the buttermilk. In a third bowl, place the cornmeal.
- 3
Coat the Tomatoes
Dredge each tomato slice in the flour mixture, then dip in the buttermilk, and finally coat with cornmeal, pressing lightly to adhere.
- 4
Fry the Tomatoes
In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Once hot, carefully add the breaded tomato slices. Fry until golden brown on each side, about 3-4 minutes per side.
- 5
Drain and Serve
Remove the fried green tomatoes from the skillet and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve warm with pimento cheese and hot and spicy okra.
