Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Cook the Filling

In a skillet over medium heat, add the olive oil and sauté the chopped onion and green pepper until they are softened, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute. Remove the vegetables from the skillet and set aside.

  2. 2

    Brown the Sausage

In the same skillet, add the Italian sausage. Cook until browned and fully cooked, breaking it up into small pieces with a spatula. Drain excess fat if necessary.

  3. 3

    Combine Ingredients

Add the sautéed onion and green pepper back into the skillet with the sausage. Stir in the salt and black pepper, and mix well. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.

  4. 4

    Prepare the Calzone Dough

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Roll out pizza dough on a floured surface into a large oval shape.

  5. 5

    Assemble the Calzone

On one half of the dough, spread the sausage mixture evenly. Top with shredded mozzarella cheese. Fold the other half of the dough over the filling to create a pocket. Press the edges to seal and crimp with a fork.

  6. 6

    Bake the Calzone

Transfer the calzone to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.

  7. 7

    Serve

Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing. Serve warm.
