Method

Prepare the Meat Sauce

  1. 1

    Cook the Vegetables

In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion, grated carrot, and diced celery. Sauté until the vegetables are softened, about 5 minutes.

  2. 2

    Brown the Meat

Add the ground beef and ground pork to the skillet. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon, about 8-10 minutes.

  3. 3

    Add Garlic and Seasoning

Stir in the minced garlic, salt, black pepper, Italian seasoning, and bay leaf. Cook for an additional 2 minutes until fragrant.

  4. 4

    Incorporate Tomatoes and Wine

Pour in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and red wine. Stir to combine, then bring the mixture to a simmer.

  5. 5

    Simmer the Sauce

Reduce the heat and let the sauce simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally until thickened.

Prepare the Lasagna

  1. 6

    Cook the Lasagna Noodles

In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook the lasagna noodles according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

  2. 7

    Mix Ricotta Filling

In a mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, chopped fresh basil, and a pinch of salt and pepper. Mix until well combined.

  3. 8

    Layer the Lasagna

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Spread a thin layer of the meat sauce on the bottom of a baking dish. Layer 3 lasagna noodles, followed by half of the ricotta mixture, one-third of the mozzarella cheese, and a layer of meat sauce. Repeat the layers, finishing with a final layer of noodles and meat sauce on top.

  4. 9

    Top with Cheese

Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella and grated Parmesan cheese over the top of the lasagna.

  5. 10

    Bake the Lasagna

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the top is golden and bubbly.

  6. 11

    Rest and Serve

Remove the lasagna from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing. Serve warm.
