Cocktail

1

Chill the glass

Place a coupe or rocks glass in the freezer for at least 5 minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to ensure the drink stays cold.

2

Measure and combine

Add 2 oz rye whiskey, 1 oz sweet red vermouth, and 2 dashes Angostura bitters to a mixing glass. If using, add 0.25 oz maraschino liqueur for added cherry complexity.

3

Add ice and stir

Fill the mixing glass with large ice or plenty of cocktail ice. Stir gently but thoroughly with a bar spoon for 30–45 seconds (about 20–30 revolutions) until the mixture is well chilled, slightly diluted, and clear.

4

Prepare the glass and garnish

Discard ice water from your chilled glass if using, or remove glass from freezer. Express an orange twist over the glass by holding the peel skin-side down about 3–4 inches above the glass and giving it a sharp twist to release oils, then rub the peel on the rim and set aside.

5

Strain and finish

Using a strainer, strain the chilled cocktail from the mixing glass into the chilled coupe or rocks glass over the large ice cube (if serving on the rocks) or without ice for a up-style Manhattan. Drop one Luxardo or maraschino cherry into the drink and garnish with the expressed orange twist.

6

Serve

Serve immediately. Sip and enjoy. Note: Adjust sweetness by varying vermouth between 0.75–1.25 oz and adjust spirit base (rye or bourbon) to preference.

Tools

7

Use the jigger to measure spirits and vermouth accurately. Use the bar spoon to stir and the strainer to pour cleanly into the chilled glass. Use the peeler to make an orange twist.
