Cocktail Base

Method

Prep

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a coupe or rocks glass in the freezer or fill with ice water to chill while you prepare the cocktail.

  2. 2

If using egg white, separate one egg and reserve the white. Use very fresh eggs or pasteurized egg white for safety if desired.

Mixing the Cocktail

  1. 3

Dry shake (if using egg white)

In a cocktail shaker, add gin (or vodka), fresh lemon juice, lime juice, simple syrup, egg white, orange bitters, and grenadine (if using). Do not add ice. Seal and shake vigorously for 15–20 seconds to emulsify the egg white and build a creamy foam.

  2. 4

    Wet shake

Open the shaker and add a generous handful of ice (about 1 cup). Seal and shake hard for 10–15 seconds until the shaker is very cold to the touch and the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted.

  3. 5

    Strain

Discard the ice/water from the chilled glass (if used). Double-strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe or rocks glass using a Hawthorne strainer plus a fine mesh strainer to remove ice shards and any egg particulates.

  4. 6

    Top with energy drink

Carefully pour the energy drink over the back of a bar spoon into the center of the cocktail so it layers lightly and retains some effervescence. Pour slowly — about 2 oz — so the drink doesn’t flatten.

Finish & Serve

  1. 7

Garnish with a lemon wheel or twist and optionally a small piece of candied ginger or dehydrated citrus on the rim. Serve immediately.

  2. 8

Enjoy responsibly — the caffeine and alcohol combination can mask intoxication. One serving per person.
