Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a coupe or chilled rocks glass in the freezer for a few minutes or fill with ice water while you prepare the cocktail. This keeps the Manhattan cold without over-diluting when served.

  2. 2

    Measure and combine

In a mixing glass, combine 2 oz Sagamore Rye whiskey, 1 oz sweet vermouth, and 2 dashes aromatic bitters. Use a jigger for accurate measurement.

  3. 3

    Add ice and stir

Fill the mixing glass with large ice cubes. Stir gently but thoroughly for 20–30 seconds (about 15–20 full rotations), until the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted β€” the outside of the mixing glass should feel very cold.

  4. 4

    Prepare glass and garnish

If you chilled the serving glass with ice water, discard the water and dry the glass. Express an orange peel over the glass by holding it skin-side down over the rim and giving it a quick twist to release oils (optional). Rub the peel briefly around the glass rim if desired.

  5. 5

    Strain and finish

Using a julep or Hawthorne strainer, double-strain the stirred cocktail into the chilled coupe or rocks glass (serve up in a coupe or in a rocks glass over one large ice cube if preferred).

  6. 6

    Garnish and serve

Drop 1 Luxardo maraschino cherry into the drink. If using the expressed orange peel, add it as a garnish. Serve immediately.
