Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a martini or coupe glass in the freezer or fill it with ice water to chill while you prepare the cocktail (at least 5 minutes).

  2. 2

    Brew espresso

Brew 1 ounce of fresh espresso. If using very hot espresso, let it sit 1–2 minutes to cool slightly — it should still be warm to help dissolve sugar but not scalding hot.

  3. 3

    Combine ingredients

In a cocktail shaker, add the vodka (2 oz), coffee liqueur (1 oz), freshly brewed espresso (1 oz), and simple syrup (0.25 oz).

  4. 4

Add ice and dry shake (optional)

If you want a stronger crema and foam, first perform a dry shake: add no ice, close the shaker and shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds to emulsify the espresso and create foam.

  5. 5

    Shake with ice

Add ice to the shaker (about 1 cup or enough to fill the shaker halfway) and shake vigorously for 12–20 seconds until the shaker is very cold to the touch. Shaking with ice chills the drink and produces a silky, foamy top.

  6. 6

    Double strain and serve

Remove your chilled glass’s ice if you used ice water. Strain the cocktail through the shaker’s strainer into the chilled glass. For an extra-smooth texture, double-strain through a fine mesh strainer to remove tiny ice shards and espresso solids.

  7. 7

    Garnish

Garnish with three whole coffee beans placed on the foam in the center of the drink.

  8. 8

    Serve

Serve immediately while frothy. Enjoy responsibly.

Equipment Notes

  1. 9

If you don’t have an espresso machine, use very strong brewed coffee (concentrate) cooled to warm temperature; the flavor will be slightly different. Use freshly made espresso for best crema. Use a metal shaker for fastest chilling.
