Cocktail
Optional/Bar Tools
Method
Build & Stir
- 1
Chill glass (optional)
Place the rocks glass in the freezer for a few minutes or fill with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to lightly chill the glass. Discard ice water before straining.
- 2
Add 2 oz Maker's Mark bourbon to a mixing glass or tin.
- 3
Add 0.75 oz Averna amaro to the mixing glass.
- 4
Add 2 dashes mole bitters and 2 dashes walnut bitters into the mixing glass.
- 5
Fill the mixing glass with large ice cubes (enough to nearly fill it).
- 6
Stir vigorously for 20–30 seconds until the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted (the sides of the glass will become frosty). Aim for about 20–25% dilution by mouthfeel — enough to soften the alcohol while preserving body.
Finish & Garnish
- 7
Discard ice from the chilled rocks glass if you used ice water. Add one large clear ice cube if desired.
- 8
Using a julep or Hawthorne strainer, strain the stirred cocktail into the prepared rocks glass over the ice cube.
