Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Chop the vegetables

Finely chop the onion, carrot, celery, and garlic.

Cooking the Sauce

  1. 2

    Sauté the vegetables

In a large skillet or saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, carrot, celery, and garlic. Sauté until softened, about 5-7 minutes.

  2. 3

    Brown the meat

Add the ground beef to the skillet. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon, about 5-7 minutes.

  3. 4

    Deglaze with wine

Pour in the red wine and bring to a simmer, scraping the bottom of the pan to release any browned bits. Cook for about 2-3 minutes until the wine has reduced slightly.

  4. 5

    Add tomatoes and broth

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, beef broth, salt, pepper, oregano, basil, and bay leaf. Bring to a simmer.

  5. 6

    Simmer the sauce

Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer uncovered for about 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  6. 7

    Add milk

Stir in the milk and let it simmer for an additional 5 minutes.

Cooking the Pasta

  1. 8

    Cook spaghetti

In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the spaghetti and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Serving

  1. 9

    Combine and serve

Toss the cooked spaghetti with the Bolognese sauce. Serve hot, garnished with grated Parmesan cheese and fresh basil leaves.
