Bloody Mary Mix

Method

Bloody Mary Mix

  1. 1

    Make the Mix

In a pitcher, combine 3 cups tomato juice, 1 tsp prepared horseradish, 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce, 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice, 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice, 6 dashes hot sauce, 1 tsp celery salt, 1 tsp coarsely ground black pepper, 1 tsp smoked paprika, and 1 tablespoon pickle brine. Whisk thoroughly until evenly blended.

  2. 2

    Adjust Seasoning

Taste the mix and adjust acidity, heat, and salt: add more lemon or lime for brightness, more hot sauce for heat, more horseradish for bite, or additional Worcestershire for umami. The final mix should be assertive and slightly savory — not bland.

  3. 3

    Add Alcohol and Chill

Add 6 ounces vodka to the pitcher and stir to combine. Refrigerate the mix for at least 20 minutes (or chill with ice immediately if serving right away). If you prefer a non-alcoholic version, omit vodka and replace with 6 ounces chilled tomato juice or cold water.

Glass Preparation & Assembly

  1. 4

    Rim the Glass

On a small plate, mix 2 tablespoons coarse salt with 1 teaspoon celery salt. Rub a lemon or lime wedge around the rim of each highball glass, then dip the rim into the salt mixture to coat evenly.

  2. 5

    Fill Glass with Ice

Place about 1/2 cup ice into each glass (total ice listed in ingredients is approximate). Large ice cubes are preferred to minimize dilution.

  3. 6

    Pour Drink

Stir the chilled Bloody Mary mix again and pour approximately 6 ounces of the prepared mix (including its vodka) into each prepared glass over the ice. Gently stir once with a bar spoon to integrate ice-chilled mix.

Garnish Construction

  1. 7

    Skewer the Extras

Thread cocktail skewers with a sequence of one cherry tomato, one green olive, one cornichon, and one cooked shrimp (or assemble combinations to your preference). Prepare four skewers for four drinks.

  2. 8

    Add Bacon & Citrus

Rest a crisp bacon strip on the rim of each glass (if bacon is wide, fold or skewer it). Tuck a lemon wedge and a lime wedge into the glass rim along with a celery stalk so the celery stands upright.

  3. 9

    Final Garnish Placement

Place one prepared skewer across each glass or stand it leaning into the drink. Ensure each glass receives 1-2 pieces of additional garnish (shrimp, tomato, olive, cornichon) so every component listed in the garnish section is used across the batch. Serve immediately.

Serving & Notes

  1. 10

Serve the Dressed Up Bloody Mary cold with a long straw and small fork for the garnishes. Encourage guests to mix or nibble on garnishes between sips. Leftover mix (without ice) will keep covered in the refrigerator for up to 2 days; if storing with vodka, stir before serving. Adjust spice levels to taste.
