Electrolyte Base

Method

Electrolyte Base

1

Combine liquids

In a large pitcher, add 4 cups of cold water and 1 cup of unsweetened coconut water. Stir to combine.

2

Add 1 teaspoon sea salt and 1 teaspoon baking soda to the liquid mixture. Stir until salts dissolve completely. These provide sodium and bicarbonate to mimic commercial sports drink electrolytes.

Carbohydrate + Flavor

3

Warm 2 tablespoons of water in a small bowl or microwave-safe cup and dissolve 3 tablespoons granulated sugar in it to ensure no graininess. If using agave syrup, add 1 tablespoon now and stir to combine.

4

Pour the sugar/agave mixture into the pitcher. Add 3 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice and 1/4 cup orange juice. Stir thoroughly until fully incorporated.

5

If using natural sports flavoring (powdered concentrate or drops), add about 1/2 teaspoon now and mix. Taste and adjust: add more lemon/orange or a bit more sugar if you prefer sweeter, or an extra 1/4 teaspoon salt if you need more sodium.

6

Add 1/4 teaspoon citric acid if you want brighter tartness and improved shelf life (optional). Stir again.

Color & Preservation (optional)

7

If you want the beverage colored, stir in 1 tablespoon of a clear juice or a small pinch of a natural colorant (e.g., diluted beet for red, blue spirulina for blue) until the desired shade is reached. Mix thoroughly.

8

Taste the drink and adjust sweetness, salt, or acid in small increments (1/2 tbsp sugar, 1/8 tsp salt, or a squeeze of citrus) until balanced.

Chill & Serve

9

Refrigerate the pitcher for at least 30 minutes (or until cold). Alternatively, serve immediately over ice if preferred. Stir before pouring.

10

Pour into serving bottles or glasses over ice. Garnish with lemon or lime slices if desired. Keeps refrigerated for up to 3–4 days; shake or stir before using.
