Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water (about 100°F or 38°C) with yeast and honey (if using). Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine hard white wheat flour and salt. Mix well to ensure the salt is evenly distributed.

Dough Formation

  1. 3

    Combine Ingredients

Create a well in the center of the flour mixture. Pour in the activated yeast mixture and olive oil. If using herbs, add them now.

  2. 4

    Knead the Dough

Using your hands or a spoon, mix the ingredients until a dough forms. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.

Proofing

  1. 5

    First Rise

Place the kneaded dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.

Baking

  1. 6

    Shape the Dough

After the first rise, punch down the dough to release the air. Shape it into a loaf or divide it into rolls as preferred.

  2. 7

    Second Rise

Place the shaped dough on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Cover it again and let it rise for an additional 30 minutes.

  3. 8

    Preheat Oven

While the dough is rising, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

  4. 9

    Bake

Once the dough has risen, place it in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

Cooling

  1. 10

    Cool Down

Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack for at least 15 minutes before slicing.
