Cooking Directions

  1. 1

    Prepare the Onions

In a large pot or Dutch oven, melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring frequently, until they are caramelized and golden brown, about 30-40 minutes.

  2. 2

    Add Garlic and Broth

Add the minced garlic to the pot and cook for another minute. Pour in the white wine, scraping the bottom of the pot to remove any browned bits. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes. Then, add the beef broth, thyme, bay leaf, salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and let it simmer for 30 minutes.

  3. 3

    Prepare the Bread

While the soup is simmering, preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Slice the French baguette into thick slices and place them on a baking sheet. Toast in the oven for about 5-7 minutes, or until golden brown.

  4. 4

    Serve the Soup

Remove the bay leaf from the soup. Ladle the hot soup into oven-safe bowls, top each with a slice of toasted baguette, and sprinkle with shredded Gruyère cheese. Place the bowls under the broiler for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

  5. 5

    Enjoy

Serve the soup hot and enjoy your delicious French Onion Soup!
