Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Muddle the Sugar and Bitters

In an Old Fashioned glass, place the sugar cube and add the Angostura bitters on top. Use a muddler or the back of a spoon to crush the sugar and bitters together until the sugar has dissolved.

  2. 2

    Add Water

Pour in 1 teaspoon of water into the glass and stir until the sugar is fully dissolved.

  3. 3

    Add Whiskey

Pour 2 ounces of bourbon or rye whiskey into the glass over the muddled sugar mixture.

  4. 4

    Add Ice

Add one large ice cube or several smaller cubes to the glass to chill the drink.

  5. 5

    Stir the Mixture

Gently stir the mixture in the glass for about 20-30 seconds to combine the flavors and chill the drink further.

  6. 6

    Garnish

Express the oils of a slice of orange peel over the drink by gently twisting it and then place it in the glass. Add a maraschino cherry for additional garnish.

Serving

  1. 7

    Serve

Enjoy your Old Fashioned cocktail straight up or on the rocks, as preferred. Optionally, you can garnish with an additional slice of orange peel and a cocktail cherry for an extra touch.
