Cocktail Base
1. Measure and combine spirits
In a large mixing pitcher or a bartender's mixing glass, pour 6 fl oz bourbon, 2 fl oz rye whiskey, 1 fl oz amaro (such as Averna), and 1 fl oz sweet vermouth. The proportions create a bold, layered base for multiple cocktails.
Bitters & Finishing
3. Add bitters
Add 4 dashes Angostura bitters and 2 dashes orange bitters to the combined liquid. If you prefer more complexity, you can add 1–2 additional dashes of aromatic or chocolate bitters.
4. Stir and chill
Add the large ice cubes to the mixing glass or pitcher and stir gently for 30–45 seconds until the mixture is well chilled (the outside of the glass should feel noticeably cold) and slightly diluted — about 15–20% dilution is typical for stirred spirit-forward cocktails.
5. Strain to serving glasses
Place a large ice cube or two into each of four rocks glasses. Using a julep strainer or a hawthorne strainer, evenly strain the mixed cocktail into the four glasses (approximately 2.5–3 fl oz per glass).
6. Garnish and finish
Express the oils of an orange twist over each glass by holding the twist over the drink and giving it a firm pinched bend so the oils spray over the surface; rub the twist on the rim and drop it in as garnish. If desired, lightly sprinkle a pinch of smoked salt over each drink to heighten savory, weary flavors.
