Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Prepare

Chill a coupe or rocks glass by filling it with ice and set aside. Juice a fresh lemon to measure 0.75 oz of lemon juice and prepare a lemon twist for garnish.

  2. 2

    Build and Shake

In a cocktail shaker, add 2 oz bourbon, 0.75 oz Aperol, 0.5 oz Amaro, 0.75 oz fresh lemon juice, and 0.25 oz simple syrup if you prefer slightly sweeter balance. Add a generous handful of ice to the shaker.

  3. 3

    Shake

Seal the shaker and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds, until the shaker is well-chilled and slightly frosty on the outside. This both chills and dilutes the drink to proper balance.

  4. 4

    Prepare Glass

Discard the ice from the chilled serving glass. If you prefer the cocktail over ice, fill a rocks glass with fresh large ice; otherwise use the chilled coupe for a neat serve.

  5. 5

    Strain and Serve

Double-strain the contents of the shaker into the prepared glass (use a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer or a julep strainer) to remove small ice shards and any pulp from the lemon juice.

  6. 6

    Garnish

Express the lemon twist over the drink by holding it skin-side down above the glass and giving it a quick twist to release oils, then rub the rim with the twist and drop it into or rest it on the glass.

  7. 7

    Taste and Adjust (optional)

Taste the cocktail. If it seems too tart, add 0.25 oz more simple syrup and stir briefly; if too sweet, a few drops more lemon juice will brighten it. Serve immediately.
