Method
Fried Chicken
Marinate the Chicken
In a bowl, soak the chicken pieces in buttermilk for at least 2 hours or overnight in the refrigerator.
Coat the Chicken
Remove the chicken from the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off. Dredge each piece in the flour mixture until fully coated.
Fry the Chicken
Heat oil in a deep skillet over medium-high heat. Fry the chicken pieces until golden brown and cooked through, about 15-20 minutes. Drain on paper towels.
Waffles
Cook the Waffles
Preheat a waffle iron and lightly grease it. Pour the batter into the waffle iron and cook according to the manufacturer's instructions until golden brown.
Hunter's Gravy
Make the Gravy
Add flour to the bacon drippings and whisk for 1-2 minutes. Gradually add chicken broth, stirring constantly until thickened. Season with salt, pepper, and thyme.
Combine
Stir the crumbled bacon back into the gravy.
Serve
Plate the Dish
Serve a piece of fried chicken on top of a waffle, drizzle with hunter's gravy, and finish with maple syrup.
