For the citrus base
To finish the drink
Method
Prepare the citrus base
Juice the fruit
Roll lemons and limes on the counter to loosen juice. Halve and juice enough lemons and limes to yield 1 cup lemon juice and 1 cup lime juice. Strain through a fine mesh if you prefer pulp-free liquid.
Make a simple citrus syrup
In a small bowl or measuring cup, combine 3 tablespoons granulated sugar with 2 tablespoons warm water. Stir until sugar dissolves completely. This step ensures even sweetness and prevents undissolved grains in the cold drink.
Combine juices and syrup
In a pitcher, whisk together the lemon juice, lime juice, and the dissolved sugar syrup until fully incorporated.
Assemble and serve
Dilute and chill
Add 4 cups cold water to the citrus mixture and stir. Taste and adjust sweetness or tartness: add up to 1–2 more tablespoons sugar dissolved in a little warm water if too tart, or add more cold water if too strong.
Add fizz (optional)
If you want a sparkling Lemon Lime, gently stir in 1 cup chilled club soda or sparkling water just before serving to preserve carbonation.
Serve
Fill glasses with ice (about 1/2 cup per glass). Pour the Lemon Lime over ice. Garnish each glass with a lemon and lime slice and 1–2 mint leaves if using. Serve immediately.
Storage
Store any leftover non-carbonated Lemon Lime in a sealed pitcher or bottle in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. If stored and then served, re-taste and adjust sweetness. If you stored with club soda, consume within a few hours to retain fizz.
