Preparation
- 1
Prepare the Balsamic Reduction
In a small saucepan, pour the balsamic vinegar. Heat over medium heat until it comes to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes until it thickens slightly. Remove from heat and let it cool.
- 2
Slice the Fresh Mozzarella and Tomatoes
While the balsamic reduction is cooling, slice the fresh mozzarella and ripe tomatoes into even slices, about 1/4 inch thick.
- 3
Prepare the Basil
Rinse the fresh basil leaves under cold water and pat them dry with a paper towel. Set aside.
Assembly
- 4
Layer the Salad
On a large serving platter, alternate layers of mozzarella slices, tomato slices, and basil leaves. Start with mozzarella, followed by a tomato, then a basil leaf, and repeat until all ingredients are used.
- 5
Drizzle the Dressing
Drizzle the cooled balsamic reduction over the assembled salad. Then, drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and black pepper to taste.
- 6
Serve
Serve immediately as a refreshing appetizer or side salad.
