Method
Prepare Bread & Spreads
- 1
Toast and butter
Lightly butter one side of each bread slice with the unsalted butter. Heat a skillet over medium heat and toast the buttered sides until golden, 1–2 minutes per side. Alternatively, toast in a toaster until edges are lightly browned. Set toasted slices on a clean board, buttered side down.
- 2
Mix the mayonnaise and Dijon mustard together in a small bowl. Spread about 1 tsp of the mayo‑mustard mixture on the unbuttered side of 4 bread slices (these will be the interior sides). Spread the remaining mixture on the other 4 slices (these will be the top slices).
Prepare Produce

- 4
Season the tomato slices lightly with half of the kosher salt and half of the black pepper. This draws out some moisture and adds flavor.
Assemble Sandwiches
- 5
Layer protein and cheese
On the mayo‑mustard side of four bread slices, layer 3 slices of roast turkey (overlap slightly), then 1 slice of cheddar cheese, then 2 slices of smoked ham arranged evenly. This order helps distribute moisture and heat retention.
- 6
Add produce and pickles
Top the meat and cheese with 2 leaves of red leaf lettuce, 2 basil leaves, 2–3 cucumber slices, 2 tomato slices, and 2 dill pickle slices per sandwich. Sprinkle the remaining kosher salt and black pepper evenly over the tomato layer.
- 7
Cover each sandwich with the remaining bread slices (mayo‑mustard side down). Press gently to compact layers and cut each sandwich in half diagonally with a sharp serrated knife.
