Simple Syrup

Method

Simple Syrup

  1. 1

    Make syrup

In a small saucepan combine 1 cup granulated sugar and 1 cup water. Add 1 tablespoon fresh lemon zest. Heat over medium, stirring occasionally, until sugar dissolves and mixture comes to a gentle simmer (about 3–5 minutes). Do not boil vigorously. Once sugar is fully dissolved and syrup is fragrant with lemon zest, remove from heat.

  2. 2

Cool and strain: Let the syrup cool for 10–15 minutes, then strain through a fine mesh sieve to remove the zest. Transfer syrup to a jar and chill in the refrigerator until needed. Syrup will keep up to 2 weeks refrigerated.

Lemonade

  1. 3

    Juice lemons

Roll lemons on the counter to soften, then cut and juice until you have 1 cup fresh lemon juice (approximately 4–6 medium lemons). Strain seeds and excess pulp if you prefer a smoother drink.

  2. 4

    Combine base

In a large pitcher, combine 1 cup fresh lemon juice, 3 cups cold water, and 1 cup of the prepared simple syrup. Stir thoroughly and taste. Adjust sweetness by adding more syrup (up to 1/2 cup extra) or more water for a lighter flavor.

  3. 5

    Chill and adjust

Add 4 cups ice to the pitcher to cool the lemonade quickly, or refrigerate for 30–60 minutes if making ahead. If you want a fizzy Liberty Lemonade, stir in up to 1 cup chilled club soda just before serving to preserve carbonation.

  4. 6

    Add aromatics

Tear 8 fresh mint leaves gently with your fingers to release aroma and add them to the pitcher along with 6 lemon slices. Stir gently to combine.

Garnish & Service

  1. 7

Prepare glasses: Fill 6 glasses with crushed ice (about 2 cups total across glasses).

  2. 8

Pour and garnish: Pour the chilled lemonade into the prepared glasses. Add one lemon wheel and a mint sprig to each glass. For the promotional 'Liberty' look, add red and blue berries (such as raspberries and blueberries) on top or use small themed cocktail umbrellas as desired.

  3. 9

Serve immediately: If you added club soda, serve immediately to retain fizz. Offer extra simple syrup and lemon slices on the side for guests who want to adjust sweetness or tartness.
