Method
Preparing and toasting the bread
- 1
- 2
Preheat toasting method
If using a toaster, set it to medium (about 3–4 on a 1–6 dial). If using an oven/toaster oven, preheat broiler or oven to 375°F (190°C). If using a skillet, heat over medium heat.
- 3
Toast the bread
Toaster: Insert slices and toast until golden and edges are crisp, about 2–4 minutes depending on toaster setting. Oven/broiler: place slices on a baking sheet and bake 4–6 minutes per side under broiler or until golden, watching carefully to avoid burning. Skillet: add a small pat of butter or a drizzle of olive oil to the hot skillet and toast each slice 1–2 minutes per side until golden.
- 4
Check doneness
Remove a slice and check center and edges. Toast should be golden to your preference; if not done, return briefly.
Finishing and serving
- 5
Butter or oil (optional)
While toast is hot, spread about 1 tablespoon total of butter or brush with olive oil so it melts into the surface. This step is optional but enhances flavor and texture.
- 6
Add basic seasoning (optional)
If using savory toppings, lightly sprinkle 1/4 teaspoon salt and a pinch (about 1/8 teaspoon) of black pepper over the buttered toast.
- 7
Apply chosen toppings
Jam or preserves: spread about 2 teaspoons evenly across each slice. Peanut or other nut butter: spread about 2 teaspoons per slice. Avocado: mash 1/2 cup and spread evenly; season with a pinch of salt, pepper, and a few drops of lemon juice if desired. Egg: place 1 cooked egg (fried, scrambled, or poached) on top of the toast. Cheese: sprinkle about 2 tablespoons grated cheese; for melted cheese, place under broiler 30–60 seconds to melt. Tomato and herbs: top with 2 tomato slices and 1 teaspoon chopped herbs.
- 8
Combine toppings (optional)
Mix and match—e.g., mashed avocado then a fried or poached egg on top, or peanut butter with sliced banana and honey. Use amounts above as a guide; adjust to taste.
- 9
Serve
Serve immediately while toast is warm and crisp. If preparing for later, keep components separately to avoid sogginess.
