Citrus Honey Ginger Base

Spirits & Amplifiers

Method

Citrus Honey Ginger Base

  1. 1

Make honey syrup (if not ready)

Combine equal parts honey and warm water (for example 2 tbsp honey + 2 tbsp warm water) and stir until smooth. Cool before using.

  2. 2

In a shaker, add 3 oz fresh orange juice, 0.5 oz fresh lemon juice, 0.5 oz honey syrup and 0.5 tsp freshly grated ginger. Briefly muddle the grated ginger with the juices and honey syrup to release aroma and spice, but avoid over-muddling to prevent excessive bite.

Spirits & Amplifiers

  1. 3

Add 1.5 oz vodka and 0.5 oz Cointreau (or triple sec) to the shaker. Add 2 dashes of bitters.

  2. 4

Fill the shaker with ice (about 1 cup) and shake briskly for 10–15 seconds until the outside of the shaker is frosty and well-chilled.

Sparkle & Finish

  1. 5

Double-strain the cocktail into a chilled Collins or highball glass filled with fresh ice to remove ginger bits and any pulp (use a fine-mesh strainer over the shaker strainer).

  2. 6

Top with about 2 oz club soda or sparkling water and gently stir once to combine — preserve some effervescence.

  3. 7

Garnish with an orange wheel and a sprig of fresh mint. Optional: express an orange peel over the top before dropping it in for extra citrus oils.
