Prepare the Tartar Sauce
In a bowl, mix together mayonnaise, finely chopped dill pickles, lemon juice, and capers (if using). Stir well and set aside in the refrigerator.

Fry the Potatoes
Heat vegetable oil in a deep frying pan to 350°F (175°C). Fry the potato strips in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 5-7 minutes. Remove and drain on paper towels. Season with salt.

Make the Beer Batter
In a bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, pepper, and beer until smooth.

Fry the Cod
Dip each cod fillet into the beer batter, allowing excess to drip off. Carefully place in the hot oil and fry for about 4-6 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Serve the golden beer-battered cod with the crispy fries and tartar sauce on the side.
