Prepare the Ingredients
Wash and slice the lettuce, tomato, and onion. Set aside.

Form the Patties
In a bowl, season the ground beef with salt and black pepper. Divide the beef into four equal portions and form into patties.

Cook the Patties
Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side for medium doneness.

Add Cheese
During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of American cheese on each patty and cover to melt.

Toast the Buns
While the cheese is melting, toast the hamburger buns in a separate skillet or in a toaster until golden brown.

Assemble the Burger
Place a lettuce leaf on the bottom half of each bun, followed by the cheeseburger patty, tomato slices, and onion rings. Top with the other half of the bun.
