Method
Prepare glass and modifiers
- 1
Chill or frost (optional)
If you prefer a very cold mule, place the serving copper mug or highball glass in the freezer for 10–15 minutes before assembling.
- 2
If using muddled add-ins (berries, cucumber, or fresh ginger), put them in the bottom of a shaker or mixing glass. Add the indicated 0.5 tbs simple syrup if you want a touch of sweetness.
- 3
Assemble the mule
- 4
Fill your chilled mug or a highball glass with 1 cup of fresh ice. If you muddled ingredients in a shaker, strain lightly over the ice to keep solids out (or leave them in if you prefer more texture).
- 5
Add the base spirit: 4 oz vodka. If you prefer a different mule variant, substitute an equal measure of your chosen spirit: gin, dark rum, or tequila.
- 6
Add 0.5 oz fresh lime juice.
- 7
Top with 8 oz ginger beer. Pour slowly to preserve carbonation.
- 8
Gently stir once or twice with a bar spoon to combine — avoid over-stirring which can flatten the ginger beer.
Finish and garnish
- 9
Garnish with 1 lime wheel or wedge on the rim and tuck 2 mint sprigs into the drink (if using mint), or add a piece of candied ginger on a pick for a spicier nod.
- 10
Serve immediately with a straw or short stirring spoon. Offer additional lime wedges and simple syrup at the table for guests to adjust to taste.
